Break Your Alabaster Box

There are several stories in the Bible that mention the alabaster box. They are almost similar because they involve a woman named Mary who brings an alabaster box containing perfume or ointment to anoint Jesus. She brings it when Jesus is sited having a meal with Simon. The two stories are in different books of the Bible but they are pretty much the same.I particularly love the story of Mary of Bethany because it stirs my heart about giving ourselves to God.

Jesus attended the feast of Bethany at Simon’s home; whom he had healed of leprosy.During the feast, Mary came and presented Jesus with her alabaster box. When Mary approached Jesus, she broke her alabaster box and anointed Him with the precious perfume.During those times, an alabaster box was very precious because it was expensive and contained expensive perfumes or oil.The precious perfume was very valuable and was used during dowry .During those days, when a young woman was ready for marriage ,her parents would purchase an alabaster box which would be part of her dowry, when a man asked for her hand in marriage she would break that box at his feet to honor him. Now, you can imagine how precious that box must have been to her but she choose to break it and pour out her precious perfume to Jesus. That was a big sacrifice.Giving Jesus one of her most priced possession. Other people who had attended the feast felt that Mary was wasting her precious oil; Mark 14:4-5 Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? 5 It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly 6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 The poor you will always have with you,[b] and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial. 9 Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”.Despite other people questioning her act,Jesus understood her.

Submission to God – Mary showed total submission to God .She gave it all to Jesus Christ and no one else.Try to think of something that you treasure very much and see if you would give it to Jesus and not anyone else.We all obviously don’t own an alabaster box 😊 but am sure we have something that equals to an alabaster box in our lives.God has given us something that is precious in our lives and we should give ourselves to him in the same way.In our lives today, your alabaster box is your talent, money, work, time, friends and relationships .Use all that to glorify God.If God has given you something precious it is best if you pour it out to him.If you keep it to yourself no one will benefit from it.If God has blessed you with a talent or any type of gift, share it with other people to Glorify God.

God understands and acknowledges you– The best thing about Mary’s alabaster box is that even though other people ridiculed her, God acknowledged and understood her. When we do anything to glorify God we should not allow those who ridicule us to bring us down because all that matters is God’s thoughts for us.Because of her sacrifice,Mary’s anointing was part of preparing Jesus for His death and was shared to many generations. Its being shared to us today. Therefore, give yourself fully to Christ and do not hold back. You never know the impact you could make to the Kingdom of God like Mary did.As an act of worship to God , commit yourself to God and advance his Kingdom.God has given you an alabaster box and you should break it for Him.If you don’t know what it is, pray about it and trust God.Openly demonstrate your love for Christ and let Him say that you have done a beautiful thing to Him like he said about Mary; Mark14: 6 “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. .

Break your alabaster for Jesus – One of the reason why an alabaster box was important is because women would break it to their husbands to honor them.Mary Choose to break her Alabaster box for Jesus. This is the same with us,if you are frantically looking for a spouse to break your alabaster box for, take it to Jesus and break it to Him.He is worthy of such honor.By responding to Jesus you can wait boldly for God’s will to provide someone for you.Entrust your alabaster box with Jesus.

There are three songs on this story that I love very much. The first one is “Praise like oil by We will worship”.Its a really beautiful song. You can find it hereThe second song is Alabaster box by Cece Winans. One of my favorites.I will leave two links for this song because they are both perfect. One is the original version by Cece Winans. The second is an Xfactor perfomance by Lillie McCloud.I hope you enjoy her perfomance. The last song is Alabaster box by Julie Meyer & Shana Wilson.I hope you are blessed by all of them.

Thank-you for reading.Sharing is Caring.
